“The Curious Case of Captain Smiley: Navigating Multiple Identities (Apache, Veteran, Community Leader) in Early-Twentieth Century Arizona”

This talk explores the life of Ismalee, a Dilzhe’e Apache who served as a Scout in the U.S. Army and was variously known to Whites as Captain Smiley, Major Smiley, or simply Smiley. Ismalee lived a very interesting life, with some even claiming that he had personally captured Geronimo in 1886. The New York Times carried his obituary when he died in 1936, a rare level of celebrity for an Apache from central Arizona. This talk explores his life and legacy, and what it meant to be an Apache, U.S. Army veteran, and community leader during incredibly difficult times in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
